I'd suspect that you could have also changed 
/usr/local/etc/rc.d/mDNSResponder.sh from

. /etc/rc.subr

to

. /usr/local/etc/rc.subr

and that would have worked equally as well, but other things may look 
for it in /etc/ as well.
