vmstat shouldn't be too hard to parse, try the following:

vmstat|tail -1|awk '{print $15;}'

To print out the 15th field of vmstat.  Now if you want vmstat to keep
running every five seconds or something, it's a little more complicated:

vmstat 5|grep -v 'procs\|avm'|awk '{print $15;}'
