kde hangs at first start...

Normally kdm is started by adding a line to /etc/ttys like this:

ttyv8  "/usr/local/bin/kdm -nodaemon"   xterm   on secure

I'm not really sure whether, or not, it's supposed to work the way you are 
using it.
