This surprises me, since you shouldn't have a ppp0 interface, and
PPPoE doesn't use DHCP to supply IP addresses.

And this should only affect automatic startup at boot-time.
Everything you've changed here should have no effect on running ppp
from the command line.
But I'm glad it worked. :-)
