Xorg/laptop

Tried that... it doesn't do anything... the only way I've been able to
shut it down is by CTRL-ALT-DEL. I've left it sit for hours before
resorting to this.

Try Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to shut down 
the X server instead of the whole machine...
