I suggest you read this page carefully a few times becouse IMO
there is no order in it. and it is confusing.

another important thing to read is /usr/src/UPDATING before you start building
your new world.

> # make buildkernel

reason is, when you boot to single user / is mounted READONLY
read the page you will find instructions for single user mode
