Sony AIT on FreeBSD

hello... I was wondering if there are any resources to help me install
the AIT tape drive that I have...

I installed the SCSI card and some hard drives and they work, I pugged
in the tape and I can do things like rewind it but something goes wrong 
when I
try to erase and dump.

Also is it true that the freeBSD dump command only works on entire volumes?
