NVIDIA Driver install problem

Hello all,
I just downloaded the NVIDIA driver package for
FreeBSD after reading the README several times,
and I installed it and modified the XF86Config
file as stated. The result: X server crashes.
Here are more specifics.
* I am running 4.8-stable, CVSUPped from a 4.7
stable install.
* I performed a portupgrade on X and on KDE
successfully before this.
* I have an Athlon XP 1.533 GHz processor, 2x256
MB 266 MHz RAM and a KXP400+ Pro mobo.
* X runs fine on the default "nv" driver that
comes with X.
* I used Make Setup while running X the first
time without realizing it until after I hit
"enter". The build and install process was so
fast I didn't have time to try to stop it.
* The XF86Config file works fine if I comment out
two lines and change "nvidia" back to "nv".
* I attempted "make clean && make setup" while
not running the X server after I realized what I
had done, and that it was not working as a normal
user or as root. Process seemed to succeed, but
errors remained the same.
* Reboot did not help.
* Turning on/off "PnP OS" in BIOS did nothing.
* Same errors as user or root.

So far as I can tell, I have done everything
exactly to the instructions, and the problem
seems to be that two modules are not loading and
"no screens are found". I cannot find any
reference to this problem in the NVIDIA
documentstion... Am I missing someting? Does
anyone have any suggestions?
