ftp 4.8iso 265k transfer to windows 98 box

Before getting too excited have a look at the actual byte count.
'ls' will do this in FreeBSD
and 'dir' at the command prompt will do it in XP
There is some flexibility in in the meaning of k

Other possibility is ftp translating it as a text file-- setb binary mode.
