Are your speakers plugged into the soundcard correctly?  Are they getting 
power?  Do you have the volume turned up?  Did you remove any headphones from 
them?

With XMMS, do you have ESD set as your sound daemon (eSound Output Plugin in 
the Preferences), and is it [ESD] running?  

If you're running KDE, you may need to run 'artsdsp xmms' for the output to be 
piped through aRtsd rather than ESD (though it'd be simpler to use noatun if 
KDE is your  desktop).
