followup to Fwd: tech support

i just looked at MAKEDEV in /usr/src/etc and it is executable, so cd to 
/dev and
attempt /usr/src/etc/MAKEDEV snd0, snd1, then attempt /usr/src/etc/MAKEDEV
uhid0, uhid1, all attempts show mknod message "no such file or directory"...

move MAKEDEV to / removes execute permission, my confusion...
