The way we support framebuffers on powermacs is by using Open Firmware. 
On some graphics hardware (a small minority of what Apple shipped, but 
which you have), the usual OF reinit pathway doesn't work after Xorg 
exits due to deficiencies in the graphics card firmware. There isn't a 
solution except for adding real KMS support to the kernel.
