From nathanw at uchicago.edu Thu May 1 01:38:11 2008 From: nathanw at uchicago.edu (Nathan Whitehorn) Date: Thu May 1 01:38:15 2008 Subject: Kernel broken? Message-ID: <48191F07.5060505@uchicago.edu> While trying to build a new kernel to test the BMAC driver, I found that a kernel built from -CURRENT no longer boots on my Powermac G3. fatal kernel trap: exception = 0x7 (program) srr0 = 0x0 srr1 = 0x8b032 curthread = ... pid = 0, comm = swapper Stopped at 0: illegal instruction 0 It looks like it branched to a NULL pointer, but where or why is not clear. This happens fairly late in the boot process, after the Timecounters tick every 10 msec message. -Nathan From grehan at freebsd.org Thu May 1 02:33:45 2008 From: grehan at freebsd.org (Peter Grehan) Date: Thu May 1 02:33:50 2008 Subject: Kernel broken? Because the G5 does not have BAT, this is broken. Even if we were to emulate it with pages, this is not a useful thing to have, since the point of the option would be defeated. But removing it would pessimize the G3/G4 port (the AIM code also panics late in boot without it, but that is a separate issue). There doesn't seem to be a way to twiddle it at runtime, which is a major problem if we want to have a single kernel running on all OEA machines. So I'm not sure what to do. Thoughts? Also, an update on the G5 port: the PMAP stuff is done to the point where the kernel boots all the way to panicing about not having a PIC, which is late in the boot process and implies that only device support remains. Trap handling is up and running as well. And (with the exception of UMA_MD_SMALL_ALLOC) the same kernel also boots on my G3. -Nathan From grehan at freebsd.org Wed May 7 15:18:55 2008 From: grehan at freebsd.org (Peter Grehan) Date: Wed May 7 15:19:18 2008 Subject: UMA_MD_SMALL_ALLOC In-Reply-To: <4821C6AB.3080101@uchicago.edu> References: <4821C6AB.3080101@uchicago.edu> Message-ID: <4821C85A.7090605@freebsd.org> Hi Nathan, > In doing the G5 port, I have a problem with the UMA_MD_SMALL_ALLOC > option. So I'm not sure what to do. Thoughts? A long time ago I talked to Alan Cox about modifying this option so it could be done at run-time, and he seemed agreeable. The mips port has a similar issue in that only the lower 512MB of RAM is direct-mapped, so a run-time decision would help them too (though it would be based on free pages and not processor variant). > Also, an update on the G5 port: the PMAP stuff is done to the point > where the kernel boots all the way to panicing about not having a PIC, > which is late in the boot process and implies that only device support > remains. Have you changed the sync_icache code to dynamically switch to 128 bytes for the G5 ? later, Peter. It has a million kinds of rough edges. If anyone wants to fix them, I'm not going to able to touch any of this code for the next week or so because of real work. Here are a few current bugs and mysteries: moea64_syncicache() is currently commented out, since in certain circumstances I can't identify and don't make sense, calling _syncicache() causes an alignment trap. 3 knobs need to be twiddled to get the kernel to run on G3/G4 machines after applying the patch. UMA_MD_SMALL_ALLOC needs to be defined in vmparam.h, and the two instances of rfid in trap_subr.S need to be changed to rfi. This last bit can easily be done at runtime, but I haven't added this yet. The patch doesn't include the required addition of mmu_oea64.c to /sys/conf/files.powerpc. Adding the OF pages to ofw_pmap instead of the kernel pmap causes an ISI on Open Firmware calls because of a null pointer deference. Mysterious. There is no real reason to add them to ofw_pmap, though. (I've mapped OF directly into the kernel's address space in order to get pages for the frame buffer and few other things we got to use BAT for on older systems) L2 Cache setup and CPU speed printout isn't set up and doesn't work. No SMP support (though it shouldn't be too terrible to set up). And, of course, there is no support for the IBM CPC bridges or the cascaded OpenPICs. -Nathan From tinderbox at freebsd.org Sat May 10 04:20:11 2008 From: tinderbox at freebsd.org (FreeBSD Tinderbox) Date: Sat May 10 04:20:16 2008 Subject: [head tinderbox] failure on powerpc/powerpc Message-ID: <20080510042009.F0C1E73039@freebsd-current.sentex.ca> TB --- 2008-05-10 02:58:04 - tinderbox 2.3 running on freebsd-current.sentex.ca TB --- 2008-05-10 02:58:04 - starting HEAD tinderbox run for powerpc/powerpc TB --- 2008-05-10 02:58:04 - cleaning the object tree TB --- 2008-05-10 02:58:34 - cvsupping the source tree TB --- 2008-05-10 02:58:34 - /usr/bin/csup -r 3 -g -L 1 -h localhost -s /tinderbox/HEAD/powerpc/powerpc/supfile TB --- 2008-05-10 02:58:43 - building world (CFLAGS=-O -pipe) TB --- 2008-05-10 02:58:43 - cd /src TB --- 2008-05-10 02:58:43 - /usr/bin/make -B buildworld >>> World build started on Sat May 10 02:58:45 UTC 2008 >>> Rebuilding the temporary build tree >>> stage 1.1: legacy release compatibility shims >>> stage 1.2: bootstrap tools >>> stage 2.1: cleaning up the object tree >>> stage 2.2: rebuilding the object tree >>> stage 2.3: build tools >>> stage 3: cross tools >>> stage 4.1: building includes >>> stage 4.2: building libraries >>> stage 4.3: make dependencies >>> stage 4.4: building everything >>> World build completed on Sat May 10 04:03:45 UTC 2008 TB --- 2008-05-10 04:03:45 - generating LINT kernel config TB --- 2008-05-10 04:03:45 - cd /src/sys/powerpc/conf TB --- 2008-05-10 04:03:45 - /usr/bin/make -B LINT TB --- 2008-05-10 04:03:45 - building LINT kernel (COPTFLAGS=) TB --- 2008-05-10 04:03:45 - cd /src TB --- 2008-05-10 04:03:45 - /usr/bin/make -B buildkernel KERNCONF=LINT >>> Kernel build for LINT started on Sat May 10 04:03:45 UTC 2008 >>> stage 1: configuring the kernel >>> stage 2.1: cleaning up the object tree >>> stage 2.2: rebuilding the object tree >>> stage 2.3: build tools >>> stage 3.1: making dependencies >>> stage 3.2: building everything >>> Kernel build for LINT completed on Sat May 10 04:17:02 UTC 2008 TB --- 2008-05-10 04:17:02 - building GENERIC kernel (COPTFLAGS=) TB --- 2008-05-10 04:17:02 - cd /src TB --- 2008-05-10 04:17:02 - /usr/bin/make -B buildkernel KERNCONF=GENERIC >>> Kernel build for GENERIC started on Sat May 10 04:17:02 UTC 2008 >>> stage 1: configuring the kernel >>> stage 2.1: cleaning up the object tree >>> stage 2.2: rebuilding the object tree >>> stage 2.3: build tools >>> stage 3.1: making dependencies >>> stage 3.2: building everything [...] cc -c -std=c99 -g -Wall -Wredundant-decls -Wnested-externs -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-prototypes -Wpointer-arith -Winline -Wcast-qual -Wundef -Wno-pointer-sign -fformat-extensions -nostdinc -I. -I/src/sys -I/src/sys/contrib/altq -D_KERNEL -DHAVE_KERNEL_OPTION_HEADERS -include opt_global.h -fno-common -finline-limit=15000 --param inline-unit-growth=100 --param large-function-growth=1000 -msoft-float -fno-omit-frame-pointer -msoft-float -ffreestanding -Werror /src/sys/net/raw_cb.c cc -c -std=c99 -g -Wall -Wredundant-decls -Wnested-externs -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-prototypes -Wpointer-arith -Winline -Wcast-qual -Wundef -Wno-pointer-sign -fformat-extensions -nostdinc -I. -I/src/sys -I/src/sys/contrib/altq -D_KERNEL -DHAVE_KERNEL_OPTION_HEADERS -include opt_global.h -fno-common -finline-limit=15000 --param inline-unit-growth=100 --param large-function-growth=1000 -msoft-float -fno-omit-frame-pointer -msoft-float -ffreestanding -Werror /src/sys/net/raw_usrreq.c cc -c -std=c99 -g -Wall -Wredundant-decls -Wnested-externs -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-prototypes -Wpointer-arith -Winline -Wcast-qual -Wundef -Wno-pointer-sign -fformat-extensions -nostdinc -I. -I/src/sys -I/src/sys/contrib/altq -D_KERNEL -DHAVE_KERNEL_OPTION_HEADERS -include opt_global.h -fno-common -finline-limit=15000 --param inline-unit-growth=100 --param large-function-growth=1000 -msoft-float -fno-omit-frame-pointer -msoft-float -ffreestanding -Werror /src/sys/net/route.c /src/sys/net/route.c:67:1: error: "RT_MAXFIBS" redefined In file included from /src/sys/net/route.c:54: /src/sys/net/route.h:85:1: error: this is the location of the previous definition /src/sys/net/route.c:98: error: conflicting types for 'rt_tables' /src/sys/net/route.h:333: error: previous declaration of 'rt_tables' was here *** Error code 1 Stop in /obj/powerpc/src/sys/GENERIC. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src. Here are a few current bugs and mysteries: As it turns out, I lied slightly. A PCI bus driver for the U3 bridge can be found at http://banshee.uchicago.edu/~nwhitehorn/cpcht.tgz. Interrupt delivery and setup is still broken, so the boot process hangs while trying to probe USB, but the whole PCI bus can be probed now. Also, I/O port allocation is turned off. What is "this particular case"? Xserve? G4? OFW version? Just to clarify: If I log in via ssh and issue shutdown -r now, will the machine come back up without someone being physically at the machine's keyboard? If I use Remote Reboot (power cycle) through my provider, I assume it will not come back up, correct? This is disheartening news. My goal is to build a server that can be completely controlled remotely. I have had STELLAR success with FreeBSD on i386. The Xserve is still a heck of a box. Is there any hope this situation will be remedied in a near-future release? Thanks again. The problem with FreeBSD on Apple hardware is that we don't have a driver for the power management unit. My downtime will still be less with FreeBSD under the hood, even if I have to pay someone to visit the cage in person a handful of times a year. I haven't had a power failure in years, and in my experience FreeBSD will not hang unless I do something wrong (maybe ppc will be different - we shall see!) Just to clarify, if: A) FreeBSD stops working (power is on but I can't log in via ssh) B) Power is cut (cord unplugged, backup battery dies) the only way to recover is to hit the power button. Is OFW/single user login also required? >> If I use Remote Reboot (power cycle) through my provider, I assume >> it will >> not come back up, correct? > > Correct. > >> This is disheartening news. Without FreeBSD thousands of quality computers with plenty of life left will become obsolete; Apple has moved on, NetBSD is too hard to install, and Linux is, well, you know... My six year-old TiBook is still more reliable (and better outfitted) than some recent i386 laptops I've used. The last revision of the ADB code I wrote had the first bits of a PMU driver (written for a borrowed laptop, so I can't work on it anymore). It had enough pieces working that ADB was semi-functional, but could probably be expanded to do things like this without too much trouble, assuming Linux or NetBSD have worked out the communication protocol for programming this already. You will likely need MacOS for this. This is in common with the most annoying bits of the NetBSD install. I believe Marcel's gpart work can fix the partitioning issue, but the boot loader thing won't go away unless and until FreeBSD acquires in-kernel HFS support. There was a port of the Darwin HFS module back in the 5.3 days, but it has suffered badly from bit rot with all the VFS changes since then. -Nathan From grehan at freebsd.org Tue May 13 22:01:46 2008 From: grehan at freebsd.org (Peter Grehan) Date: Tue May 13 22:01:57 2008 Subject: FreeBSD on PPC embedded on Xilinx FPGA In-Reply-To: <808375.35825.qm@web45805.mail.sp1.yahoo.com> References: <808375.35825.qm@web45805.mail.sp1.yahoo.com> Message-ID: <482A0FC7.6090000@freebsd.org> Hi Won, > I noticed that PPC is well integrated in the Xilinx XPS for FPGA > applications.
