FreeBSD/ppc troubles and old files - safe to remove?

It certainly did make a difference. After removing those files, I found
out this: for some reason I don't know, both perl and gmake wanted
older versions of libraries (the files that I had removed). So I did a
'portupgrade -f gmake' and 'portupgrade -f perl',and that seems to have
fixed things. I have installed the icu port without problems, and
portupgraded gmake and a whole lot of other ports, without a panic.
Currently portupgrading the xfce4* ports. If all goes well, there will
be another message from me in a day or two (or three, depending on how
long time it takes).
