FreeBSD on an external Firewire HD

Ok, turns out it was a bad keyboard. That part is fixed. Now here's some
more problems...

Now when I boot into FreeBSD I get errors about "Operation not permitted"
during bootup when it's trying to mount /var /usr and /tmp. I had the same
errors during the install after setting them up in Disk labeler (I only
created two partitions on the external firewire HD under Mac OSX as Unix
File System). It dumps me to the default shell (/usr/bin/sh), and thats it.
I can grab an IP for my built in ethernet (pretty sweet!) but thats about
all I can do, trying to grab a port tarball with portsnap leaves it hung at
extracting. Is this all there is for FreeBSD on PPC? Or did I miss something
horribly simple, and bork my install?
