problem between p5-GD and gd (libgd)

I updated gd and p5-GD to the latest versions and found that gif animation
no longer works with gd-2.1.0

Test program:
#!/usr/bin/perl
use GD;

$im = new GD::Image(100,100);
$im->gifanimbegin (1, 0);

results in: 
libgd 2.0.33 or higher required for animated GIF support at test.pl line 5.

Rolling gd back to 2.0.35 and rebuilding p5-GD fixes the problem.
