Thanks so much for the help btw Michael :-)


Unfortunately the upgrade didn't work either.... I didn't have PEAR 
previously - I have installed now but still no luck in getting it to work.

However, in the meantime I have been contacted by the package maintainer 
who is looking at the issue and the port upgrade.
