So do many others.  There aren't plans to get rid of the ports tree
for users, but nearly all would be highly advised to use packages once
we have a decent packaging system.

Most of the issues with the ports tree that people have are building
on unclean systems; sympathy for inability to build on heavily
modified machines is going to become less common.
