I've looked through /usr/ports/UPDATING but can't find
an entry that is relevant to the situation (the
closest thing was updating the mime-database).

First things first I did a

portupgrade -f shared-mime-info

Then I ran

update-mime-database ~/.local/share/mime/

as well as

update-mime-database /usr/local/share/mime

but I still have the same error.
