oh dear.  oh well.  i don't think it is going to get any werse. i am
going to ctrl-D out of my dingy and do portupgrade -afp just to see
the werse that can happen.  maybe i will do

#portupgrade -afp; shutdown -h now; [go to bed]

yeah.  that's the ticket. actually [go to bed] is likely to be
somewhat asyncroniously implemented.
