Ah.  Thank you.  I do not have a pkg-conf.  but I do have a pkg-config. 
  And strangely I tried "portupgrade -rf pkg-config\*" initially, and it 
did nothing.  I must've mistyped it, because its working now.

This is good to know.  I'll give it a try after the above finishes. I 
suspect its gonna take a long time.
