how to build i386 versions of ports on amd64?

Hi, folks.
I want to build i386 version of port on my amd64. Is there any standard
way how to do this?
I try "cd /usr/ports/sysutils/uptimed; make ARCH=i386 install" and 
find "file /usr/local/sbin/uptimed" as 
ELF 64-bit LSB executable, AMD x86-64
So no lack.

P.S. please CC me, because i am not subscribe to that list!
