Ruby 1.8.4 and Rails problems

Hi,

I'm having some problems with Ruby 1.8.4, Rails and Apache 1.3.34 with
FreeBSD 6.0.  I'm not using mod_ruby here... just CGI, and
alternatively FastCGI.  I've tried the lang/ruby18-nopthreads port
also, with no change.  The apache error log has this in it:
