I thought "it" referred to smartd, as Mike wrote:
"Smartd does not startup on bootup, it has to be manually started."

I use smartmontools-5.33_4 on FreeBSD 6.0-STABLE #2: Fri Jan  6 15:25:23
CET 2006. My /etc/rc.conf contains the line 'smartd_enable="YES"' and
smartd is started on bootup. That's why I asked.
