Anyone working on porting Gutenprint (aka gimp-print 5)?

The new version of gimp-print (which has been renamed gutenprint)
seems to contain much goodness. It seemed strange that it has not been
mentioned on this list.
Is anyone out there currently working on or porting it? Or is there a
major reason that it cannot be ported (ie does it rely too heavily on
proprietary linux binaries?)?

While I would be willing to help where I could, I am nowhere near
being capable of porting anything near this size.
