Trying to upgrade the php5-pear port from php4-pear.

Thierry, I couldn't before.  I "fixed" it because of a lack of patience 
;) by rsyncing /usr/local/share/pear from another server and by adding 
peardev that didn't exist on this machine.  Now everything works as 
expected, which is great, except I have no idea why it wouldn't work.

Sorry for my lack of patience but I had recompiled and installed php5 
with all the trimmings and pear over 5 times and had changed everything 
that I could think of.
