Xterm and Xffm load very slowly

Computer: 1.5 GHz Pentium M w/ 512Mb ram


Hi:

 I notice that both xffm and xterm open very slowly when I am dialed
out through my Userland Modem. Below is a crude measure of the time it
took . Is it possible that Xffm is trying to locate nonexistent SMB
Network and that is the cause of the slowdowns ?
