Offhand I cant see why anyone would want to install a compatibility library 
and not use it. The knobs are not even well behaved, consider the effect of:

compat5x_enable="YES"
compat4x_enable="NO"


Furthermore I dont think that an error message on the console constitutes 
drawing peoples attention to the change  - surely that's what UPDATING is 
for.
