linux issues - ioctl errors

hi, team!

i'm a self-professed beastie bigot - fbsd is my os of choice for the
last 8 years or so. but i'm gonna stay a user, rather than a developer.
nor do i get out much on the cutting edge since my fastest box is a
660Mhz celery (256m ram, fbsd4.10, x11 4.5, xfce 4.2.2, i810). (the rest
are pentiums at 100, 150, 200 and a k6-2 350 - all with bsd, but no gui.
  oh, my firewall is a 486 dx2 66 <g>) i just wish i could do more
without linux emulation, but <sigh> unless and until i get from nothing
to up-to-speed on development (like; right?), i'll just keep enjoying
all y'all's work. Thanks!

anyway. i'm wanting to do some voice chatting with some folks. after
much grumbling and resentment, i got linux-mozilla up with it's version
of flash. now i can, at least, get into the chat room. however,
attempting to use the mic gives me "linux: 'ioctl' fd=[29,32,33,34],
cmd=0x4dfd ('M', 253) not implemented" errors everytime i access the mic
settings property in the chat room (flashchat). i'm really not sure
where to start looking, although i've been looking all over the place;
x11, xfce, fbsd.org forums, pipermail forums, google. and i'm not even
sure which linux site to start with!

maybe i'm not using quite the correct mixer? (xfce4-mixer) should i use
one of the other sound drivers? (alsa, arts, esd?) (pcm and oss) or
do i not have enough linux emulation installed?

linux-flashplugin-7.0r25_2
linux-fontconfig-2.1_3
linux-gtk-1.2_5
linux-mozilla-1.7.8_1
linux_base-8-8.0_6

gstreamer? please; as few gnome and (NO kde) libs as possible? other
port suggestions that might help my plight would be welcome, as well!

oh, i hate rebooting into w98 to chat with folks!! (xp prolly wouldn't
run very nicely on this box anyway .. not as if i were at all interested
in trying.) and i'll just be ok with not having a lot of webcam support
yet, although i did manage to get the old cam actually to work in bsd! Yay!

anyway. any thoughts y'all would care to share about that error would
be greatly appreciated! as well, of course, any tips on using my mic
(and webcam??)!
thanks!
wayne
