Read /usr/ports/UPDATING, especially the entry marked 20040723.  :)
The make.conf variables related to X have changed to support XFree86 and 
Xorg.

Just as you need to read /usr/src/UPDATING after every source tree 
update, you should get in the habit of reading /usr/ports/UPDATING 
after every ports tree update.
