penguian-command scrambles video

I'm setting up a new Compaq N401C notebook.

When I run penguian-command (built from the ports) under X it scambles the
video. in a console session it just jangs at "init'g video"

Any sugestions? My wife considers thia an "essitanl appliation" :-)
