Troubles with installation of gtk1.2 dependent ports

Ah, this is the problem.  The ports tree is a forever-changing beast. 
In order to make sure your ports build correctly, you really need to be
relatively close to either -STABLE or -CURRENT.  For Gtk+ and GNOME
ports, we require 4.6 or higher.
