What else then is the use of Makefile.local?  Use of Makefile.local 
would prevent pollution of "knob-namespace" in /etc/make.conf.

A viable alternative is of course to use /usr/local/etc/pkgtools.conf 
and for this the fine
ruby portupgrade tool.
