Each port has a log history available on freshports.  If I were going to try to
figure out why a port existed, I'd look there, which probably references a PR
which has even more history.

Is is a lot of work, but it is certainly not an impossible or even unreasonable
task, especially when rubygems that are dependencies of other ports can be
removed off the list.  maybe the list would shrink from 80 to 20, who knows?
