It seems to be a bug of the FreeBSD implementation, see

"If this method is not implemented or under Linux kernel versions earlier than
2.6.15, the mknod() and open() methods will be called instead."

I would recommend to report bug to the upstream because it should affect not
only exfat, but every pre-2.5 filesystem.
