# xset fp+ /usr/local/lib/X11/fonts/dejavu                 
xset:  bad font path element (#18), possible causes are:
    Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
    Directory missing fonts.dir
    Incorrect font server address or syntax

fonts.dir can be generated by using x11-fonts/ttmkfdir:
ttmkfdir -o fonts.dir
