This should still be an open issue.

DVDPlayer should not be the default audio player per the xbmc
documentation. It lacks many features (like replaygain support) that a
 good audio player should have.

If anyone is able to successfully use PAPlayer with xbmc on FreeBSD
please contact me. I want to troubleshoot and resolve this issue.

 Thanks,

 Rory
