 I agree this shouldn't cause core dumps -- Having the conf file unreadable
 is a misconfigration and should be reported, but an assert() / bail-out
 isn't helpful, and is probably too strong here since as you noticed it can
 cause stuff to dump core.
 
 I'll look at this in a few days (my dev environment is currently being
 rebuilt) and see about implementing more graceful handling & a meaningful
 log message.  My inclination is to get this fixed in the upcoming nss_ldap
 266 release, but adding a fix in the port shouldn't be much trouble.
 
 
 In the interim your obvious fix is the correct workaround: Make sure the
 config file is world-readable :-)
