On second thought, this patch is massive and should probably not be
committed as is.  It's better to let the maintainers update to use the
new method during the normal course of maintaining their ports.

As such I'm giving this back to the pool in case anyone else feels more
comfortable about doing this.  I'm not opposed to closing it either.
