Update this port to the latest version & take over maintainership, as the
current maintainer, russell at rucus.ru.ac.za, would like to relinquish the port
according to email from a few weeks ago.  (CC:ing Russell on this.)

Please coordinate updating this port with PR ports/96978, due to the 
dependency interactions.
