     Changing all the assignments the patch wraps in !defined(PEAR_ALIEN)
     (instead of using the .if) would also *almost* work: there's still
     the bogus USE_REINPLACE=yes (although that has become almost a noop
     I guess), and the DIST_SUBDIR doesn't look right either.

     Question for Antonio: does pear(1) accept packages with other
     suffixes besides .tgz? Are such packages common?
