>Description:
http://www.freebsd.org/gnome/docs/faq2.html#q1

describes how to install Gnome 2.12 as a package

If you try to install from the master FreeBSD packagesite, you don't get 2.12, you still get 2.10

It looks like the master FreeBSD packagesite hasn't been updated with the packages from the marcuscom tinderbox gnome packages.

>How-To-Repeat:
pkg_add -r gnome2

>Fix:
PACKAGESITE=http://www.marcuscom.com/tb/packages/5.4-FreeBSD/Latest/
export PACKAGESITE
pkg_add -r gnome2
