 I can not repeat this problem on 5.4:
 
 #/usr/local/etc/rc.d/slapd.sh start
 Starting slapd.
 #pgrep slap
 91696
 #/usr/local/etc/rc.d/slapd.sh stop
 Stopping slapd.
 Waiting for PIDS: 91696
 #pgrep slap
 #echo $?
 1
