Did you ever try
cd /usr/ports/devel/ddd && make
or did you only use 'portupgrade'? Please note that when push comes to 
shove, portupgrade is a 3rd-party-tool and has nothing to do with the 
"ports infrastructure".
If it works with plain make but not portupgrade, we should involve 
knu at ...
