Yet another wild stab in the dark: deinstalled (via pkg_delete) ALL
existing gnome libraries and applications plus all existing python
libraries and applications, then reinstalled each/all. Tried making
gramps but received the exact same error message as previously reported.

At this point I find it hard to accept that the problem exists on my
machine and have to suspect something in the python-2.3.4 suite of apps
or in the gnome2 stuff. Whatever it is, it's beyond my competence.
