Since the solution in this PR was rejected by the maintainer, we have a
situation that can't immediately be resolved until someone comes up with
some kind of proposal acceptable to everyone.  For my own convenience in
trying to catch up with the overwhelming number of recent PRs, I'm going
to mark this one "suspended" so I don't keep tripping over it.  I'm open
to some kind of more elegant solution than this.
