 Submitter, I'm not having any problems running muine as non-root.  I've
 been using the port for a while that way with no problems.  I also
 removed ~/.gnome2/muine and the directory was created just fine on
 program restart.
 
 Can you tell me exactly what errors you are getting on start or how to
 recreate this problem?  Do you get any errors in a term window or
 dialogue box?  Also, what version of the mono port do you have?
