This can be closed. I think I have worked out the error of my ways.
in http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=67915, I was having some
problems with gettext: the build would fail if I made a package
(something I generally do) and follow-on builds would fail as a result.
While I was working out what was wrong, I built gettext manually and
some bits of that were confusing the glib and gtk builds I did later
through the ports system.
I just did a "make uninstall-recursive" from
${PORTS}/devel/gettext/work/gettext-$VERSION and now everything seems
to be fine.
