this version of debugger is a way too old, there were several annoying bugs fixed since that version.
try debugging C++ program, and issue
GDB> call this->method() 
directive, you'd see an error message instead of expected result, and gdb author in a reply to that message writes,

please update gdb included with this freebsd with a newer one, at least with gdb 5.0 version
