This doesn't happen on 5.0R. Does -current still have f77 but no g77 ?? 

- If g77 exists, then the patch can be removed along with USE_AUTOCONF.
- If f77 exists but g77 doesn't then autoconf is behaving differently and the 
?= must be changed to = in the patch.

Hope that is enough to fix this. I'm still trying to get LAPACK recognized :(.
